ABOUT DAVID PAYNE :

Trainer of 99 Group 1 Winners

David Payne moved to Australia from his native South Africa in 2002, without any horses, wanting to make a new start. Since then David has become one of the most respected trainers in the tough Sydney market and holds a position in the top 5 metropolitan trainers.

David has spent the last 40 plus years surrounded by horses as either a jockey or a trainer.

David was a jockey for 7 years in his native South Africa before weight got the better of him and he took to training horses in the season 1970 / 71. He met with early success with his first ever runner, Early Bid, saluting the judge in first position, hence the name of his stables on the Summerveld Course, ‘Early Bid Lodge.’

  In a short space of time, David was to become rather fond of a horse that he considered was the best that he has ever trained. In Full Flight took all before him in having 19 starts between 2 and 4 years of age for 16 wins. Of those 16 wins, an incredible 6 were group 1’s, 3 were Group 2’s, 1 was in a Group 3 and a further win was in a Listed event.

In his 30 plus years as a trainer in South Africa, David’s record was unparalleled. He was the leading trainer of the Natal district an amazing 23 times. David has now won 99 Group 1’s both here and in South Africa. The next time you are at a trivia night, answer David Payne to the following question. Which former South African trainer has won every Group 1 race that South Africa has to offer? Amazing but true.

When David arrived in Australia in 2002, he applied for boxes at Royal Randwick. The chief executive of the AJC at the time, Tony King, rang some connections in South Africa and with their recommendation; he had the next available boxes.

This lovely filly passed Dr. Tim Roberts veterinary inspection and also passed X-Ray inspection and Endoscopic inspection.

She was considered by Dr. Tim Roberts and Dean Watt as an excellent individual and was placed in the top fillies under $200,000 at the saleyard. She was considered a “Blow The Budget” individual.

It’s easy to rattle off the exciting quotes about this individual. Simply she’s sensational. Look for yourself. It’s easy to see why (even for the untrained eye) the quality this individual exhibits.

ABOUT THE EDUCATORS:

Findley, situated close to Berrima NSW, is a purpose built property and for the education and pre-training of young thoroughbred horses. The property’s facilities include: a covered round yard and an outdoor round yard, a sand training track with barriers and tie up stalls and they have installed the “Monty Roberts Hallway System”. The property also consists of good sized yards (all with shelters) and two stable barns.

 

Findley is owned and operated by husband & wife team Gavin and Ele Edwards who reside at Findley, along with their committed staff. This ensures the property has 24/7 surveillance.

Gavin Edwards has worked in the thoroughbred industry as an educator of horses for 23 years. Having worked alongside many accomplished horse educators until establishing his own operation 8 years ago. 

Ele Edwards is an outstanding rider of young thoroughbred’s and has a long history of riding with success in equestrian events throughout the United Kingdom. Ele’s petite build makes her an ideal lightweight rider for many immature yearlings.

Pornography, not horses, was the subject of Supreme Court justice Potter Stewart's famous quote: "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it." But, as bloodhorse.com writer Dan Liebman pointed out recently, "greatness is another thing you only know when you see it."

Liebman singles out Muhammad Alias the greatest' boxer of all time, the Kentucky Derby as 'the greatest two minutes in sports in the USA" and Secretariat as the greatest winner of that great race. 

And, in describing great moments in racing, Liebman highlights one particular move that still beggars belief: "Greatness is the ability of Dehere, who in the G2 Saratoga Special was dead-stopped, yet still won in a manner that is equally amazing with every replay."

DEHERE, of course, is out of a mare by Secretariat. Which, as in the case of other leading sires like Storm Cat, A.P. Indy, Gone West, etc., may account for more than his magnificent head, muscled brow, great forearm, gaskin, hindquarter and hind leg and awesome overall athleticism.

The Secretariat factor may, indeed, account for Dehere's freakish ability on the track; and for his proven propensity to pass on ability to progeny in both hemispheres, mind you, on both dirt and turf. For there is clearly something at work here, in all these super-sire sons of Storm Bird, Seattle Slew, Mr Prospector and Deputy Minister - The answer is - Secretariat.

DEHERE, we are delighted to announce, will return in 2006 to his birthplace Kentucky. And to the farms that launched his stud career - Ashford in America and Coolmore in Australia. A timely return too, given that his first 2yo runner in Australia this year, Mirror Mirror, won the Listed Gimcrack Stakes on debut.

Named after leading basketball star Terry Dehere, his equine namesake proved no less athletic, beginning his career in 1993 with four straight wins, including an historic treble of 2yo stakes races - the G2 Saratoga Special, the G3 Sanford and the G1 Hopeful, all at Saratoga. Second, to subsequent horse-of-the-year Holy Bull, in Belmont's G1 Futurity Stakes, Dehere rebounded to capture the G1 Champagne Stakes by all of 4 lengths, thus sealing his election as Eclipse Award Champion 2yo. He returned at three to defeat a star-studded field in the G2 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream, with subsequent G1 Kentucky Derby winner Go For Gin second and Holy Bull well beaten.

Injured thereafter, Dehere retired to Ashford, where he sired 9 stakes horses from his very first crop, including juvenile G3 winner Millions (now himself a sire at stud) and multiple SW Arrested Dreams, (so nearly a winner of the G1 Matron Stakes and dam already of G2 Peter Pan Stakes winner Oratory, also retired to stud).

From Dehere's second crop came multiple GW millionaire Graeme Hall (sire at stud) and the very fast Millencolin, another multiple GW who was also 3rd in the G1 King's Bishop Stakes. Jewel in the crown of Dehere's early all-American stars, however, was Take Charge Lady. One of the very best of her generation, she twice took the G1 Spinster and annexed also the G1 Ashland Stakes in a career that spanned 11 wins - 9 at stakes level, 8 of them graded and 7 at G1/G2 level - and very nearly $2.5 million in earnings.

Sold at last year's Keeneland November breeding stock sale, Take Charge Lady made $4.2 million in foal to Seeking the Gold. Other notable North American progeny to represent Dehere include the brilliant Soto (sire at stud), a multiple GW who won 5-in-a-row and shattered a track record at Monmouth, as well as GW Puxa Saco (sold recently at Keeneland, fresh off the track, for $875,000), GW Finality and SW Easyfromthegitgo (both sires at stud). His SWs include also Win's Fair Lady (who topped the sale at Keeneland, selling for $2.2 million in foal to Giant's Causeway).

DEHERE, America's 2nd-leading sire of 2002, has obviously covered himself in glory in the southern hemisphere, ending the 2002-03 racing season as champion active sire, Australia, after already having been a champion juvenile sire in both Australia and New Zealand.
