"The most memorable racing experience has been with Savabeel in 2004 winning the Cox Plate. To have a Group One winner is an owners dream, but to be a part of horseracing history is unbelievable."
DEAN WATT RECALLS:
To say Horseracing is in Max's blood would be a major understatement.
As a member of the Australian Jockey Club, Sydney Turf Club, Melbourne Racing Club, Victorian Racing Club and Moonee Valley Racing Club he has the main bases well covered.
Max has had a passion for the glamour and excitement of the sport since he can remember.
He loves the social side of the industry as much as the exhilaration of the sport. The enjoyment that Max gains from a day at the races is the relief valve he searches for after working long hard hours in the highly stressful and demanding world of the international Stock & Futures Markets.
For Max, the only thing better than to unwind on a Saturday with his best bets in his pocket and having a beer and a bet at the track, is to go on trips away with his mates to country cup carnivals like Grafton and Wagga - that way he doubles the fun !
Max founded L Quay Futures Brokers Pty Limited in 1991. Today as Managing Director of this 24 hours trading house, the business is the ultimate success story.
However being a success at business does not automatically create success on the racetrack. Like everything in life, there are no quick fix solutions only hard work and being able to identify the skills of good people around you - this is the key.
Max has owned racehorses for 27 years and has had a long line of interesting encounters in the racing industry. Max has owned over 50 horses during this time and has experienced the summits of highs and the depths of lows and through it all (apart from his wife and daughters) the thoroughbred industry is his great passion.
Max has always had the view that the owner is the most valuable asset in racing and had a belief that not enough was being done to nurture and grow ideas to create an enjoyable experience at every entry point to the industry. It was this determination to drive ownership forward is how Max and Dean became at first business associates and now "good mates".
Max is a man of action and for many years has been giving his time to the NSW Racehorse Owners Association to which he is the current President and has also been honoured with Life Member of NSW Racehorse Owners Association.
Over the years Max has owned many good racehorses and had horses trained in many of the leading stables.
However, it was the association between Max and Dean through the Graeme Rogerson Stables that allowed Max to enjoy racing's greatest highlights - winning Group 1's.
Max was astute enough to have purchased a share in two outstanding horses: ECONSUL and SAVABEEL.
Max must have thought the month of October 2004 was a never ending dream ! During this time he won 3 x Group 1 races !
It started the first weekend when SAVABEEL stormed home to win the AJC Spring Champion Stakes Gr1 at Randwick defeating the Group 1 winner Outback Prince. The pride on display as Max led SAVABEEL back to scale is what makes the racing industry such a great experience
The middle of the month saw Max's dream come true when winning the Caulfield Guineas a Group 1 race over 1600m for 3yo's and in the process beating proven horses like Fastnet Rock and Charge Forward.
Was this unreal? 2 Group 1's in 2 weeks !
However the best was yet to come.
At the end of the month SAVABEEL stepped into equine immortality when as a 3yo he crushed the greatest horses in the Southern Hemisphere at Weight For Age in winning the Cox Pate. The only Southern Hemisphere World Series Race.
The Trifecta - 3 x Group 1 wins in a month !
Dreams can come true - Max is a shining example of what can happen.
